The MESA Project Office is based at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda, MD, a few miles north of Washington, D.C. NHLBI is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health. The Project Office manages the funding for the study. Officers also are in charge of protecting the rights and privacy of study participants, following federal laws. They make sure the study adds to health knowledge and that new discoveries are shared with other researchers and clinicians.
